When talking about maths graduates, most people would think their jobs are centred around education, such as teachers, lectures, or even tutors... While in actuality, lots of companies prefer maths graduates to do jobs that aren’t clearly related to maths, due to the skills that maths graduates have.


Maths graduates have a clear advantage in dealing with numbers, they’re our bread and butter. They are comfortable when dealing with large and complex datasets and numbers, a key part of many modern jobs, as well as being able to quickly make and assess calculations.


Here are some top jobs for maths graduates that you’ve probably never even heard of!


Actuarial Analyst

In the insurance business, especially life insurance, an actuarial analyst must calculate the average life expectancy of different demographics. These analysts crunch the numbers, taking into account many different factors and risks to find price and design insurance policies. The job deals with large numbers and uses many statistical models and calculations, making it a perfect job for a maths graduate.


Data Analyst

Data analysts are currently in high demand across all sectors, including finance, consulting, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, governmental, and education. The job does what it says on the tin, although it varies depending on where you are employed, a data analyst will study data, drawing out the necessary conclusions and evaluations. Data analysts need to be able to pay attention to detail and make clear conclusions from data, home turf for a maths graduate.


Machine Learning Engineer

Another new, highly in demand modern job. Shape the future by teaching machines and robots to learn for themselves, think Tesla’s self-driving cars and social media algorithms. While a maths graduate will need coding knowledge before applying for these jobs, their computational and analytical skills are proven to be an asset to a machine learning engineer.

Financial Manager

Maybe a bit of an obvious career for a maths graduate, a financial manager is responsible for planning, managing, and advising on a client or company’s financial decision. The deduction, analytical thinking, and pure numerical skills a maths graduate will have is extremely valuable for this job.
