Whatever your job, you will have to deal with numbers and maths. But math is not just about numbers, equations and good grades.
As one of the greatest American Mathematicians, William Paul Thurston said:
“Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms: It is about understanding.”
Maths isn’t solely about calculating numbers or memorising what equations to use. Instead, it’s about understanding the problem in front of you. The numbers are just the object, and equations are the tools that help you solve the problem.
Research done in November 2021 shows that people who excel at math generally make more money and are more satisfied with their lives. Another article also found that people who are good at math tend to live longer. How is that possible? Isn’t math only important for school? In this article, I explain how learning maths could benefit your life.
1. Learning maths increases problem-solving skills
As William Thurston said, mathematics is about understanding. It’s about understanding the problem ahead of you and how you can solve it using the tool you have.
Solving maths problems is very much the same in real life. First, you have to assess what the goal you want to achieve is? What are the resources that you have? What are the variables that you know? Then you work with steps to solve the problem to achieve that goal.
2. It’s applicable to your everyday-life problems
What does buying a house, calculating your taxes, and calculating time between destinations have in common? They need a certain level of mathematical calculations. Learning maths could help you deal with these sorts of real-life problems better.
3. Learning maths keeps your brain refreshed
Research has proven that learning maths helps brains to develop better. It forces your brain to work and create connections between neurons. It engages your brain’s analytical and problem-solving parts and keeps them refreshed.
4. Math is a universal language
No matter where you are, 2+2 will still be 4, 3+3 will still be 6. Learning maths is important because you can use it anywhere in the world.
As Neil deGrease Tyson Said:
“Math is a universal language of the universe. So the more equations you know, the more you can converse with the cosmos.”
5. It’s useful for any job
Any job you have, even an athlete could use some maths in their job. An athlete can use it to calculate the amount of practice or nutrients they need to have daily. Even Leonardo Da Vinci, one of the greatest artists of all time, uses mathematical principles of linear perspective in his works.
So, don’t hesitate to learn maths! It won’t go to waste in whatever job you might have in the future.
Conclusions
Once again, I want to emphasise this to you: maths is not only about numbers, equations, computations, or good grades… especially good grades. It’s about a way to understand the universe better and solve problems within. By learning maths, you are doing your future self a favor by developing your brain and learning to overcome more significant problems in life.
